About

Fort’s Tavern is where Wellington’s past and present meet. Built in 1872 by Charles VanCleef during the town’s days as the cheese capital of the U.S., the building has lived many lives, from cheese factory and general store to billiard hall, candy shop, and bars like Chet’s Place, and Bill’s Cafe.

Today, under owners Stacey Fortney and her husband Brad Barlow, Fort’s continues as a true family legacy. Her father, Bob Fortney, restored the space with care adding the signature fireplace and a handcrafted mahogany bar after a 1980’s fire while preserving its historic charm. The beautiful Brunswick mahogany bar was crafted in 1848, and rescued from a closing bar.

What started in the Chet’s era with just fresh sliced roast beef sandwiches and ham & bean soup, still lives on at Fort’s today, now alongside a full tavern menu featuring burgers, prime rib, wings, and Friday night favorites like hand-breaded perch sourced from Ardick’s in Lorain. With a farm-to-table approach powered in part by Brad and Stacey’s own Barlow Acres, Fort’s blends tradition, quality, and community.

Grab a cold beer, catch the game, enjoy live events like bands on the stage, karaoke, or settle in for a hearty meal. Whether you’re dining in or taking it to go, Fort’s is your go-to spot to eat, drink, and feel at home.
